Our Favorite Cat Products

I’m asked for recommendations a lot so I wanted to post a list of my favorite products for cats!

Food

When it comes to pet food, I’m fairly picky! I want well-researched, high quality options that are backed by veterinarians. When I’m food shopping, I mostly stick to Hill’s Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Purina Pro Plan since they meet those criteria.

Of course, my cats have their opinions too! Here are the brands and flavors that they love.

Dry food: Royal Canin

  • Royal Canin Indoor dry food - This is the food I originally started all my cats on. Royal Canin seems to be highly palatable and all my cats agreed that this one was good. Unfortunately my crew gains weight easily so I moved on to Royal Canin’s lower calorie options (see next two entries).

  • Royal Canin Appetite Control dry food - This is my go-to food for my cats. Everyone likes it and it’s on the lower calorie end of the spectrum.

  • Royal Canin Weight Care dry food - This is a low calorie option (lower even than Appetite Control, above). This is Fiona’s main food since she gains weight extremely easily.

Wet food: Purina Pro Plan

My cats like pate food best, so I mostly stick to pate varieties:

I will occasionally rotate in non-pate varieties. My cats like the change but these aren’t there overall favorites.

Treats

  • Squeeze Ups are pretty much unbeatable around here. Guests love to hand out Squeeze Ups to our crew. I also use them as a reward after nail trims or brushing. These also helped our shy little Avery learn to trust us.

  • Pet Honesty Hairball Support - Everyone here loves these. I don’t think they help a ton with hairballs, but they do provide a bit of extra fiber. Sometimes that is just necessary!

Bowls

  • Cat Bowls - Set of 24 - When I feed canned food, I use a lot of bowls for four cats. I used to use paper plates but I hated wasting so many paper plates. I found these dishwasher safe plastic bowls and have been using them ever since for serving canned food!

Litter: Okocat

My husband is oddly allergic to traditional clay litter. This sent me looking for a non-clay alternative that didn’t bother him but that the cats also liked. The winner was Okocat!

Okocat offers a clumping, wood-based litter. I started with their Super Soft variety, because it was similar in texture to the clay litter my cats were used to. I found this to be a tad bit dusty so I later switched to Original. It has larger pieces, less dust, and still clumps nicely!

As a bonus, it seems to last much longer than clay and is great at trapping odors.

Grooming

  • The very best brush: the Furminator! It traps loose hairs and controls shedding so quickly. I use the “long hair” version on Fiona and Liz even though I would’ve thought they were short haired. The “short hair” version just didn’t do as nice of a job on their super thick coats.

  • I recently purchased the Oneisall Pet Grooming Vacuum and it is super cool. It is a bit noisy but Fiona took to it quickly. It vacuums as you brush and makes grooming so much less messy. It has several brush attachments and clippers too. If you think you can get your pet used to the noise, it is absolutely worth trying this vacuum!

Toys

We have oh so many cat toys!!

  • Jingle Ball - This is Liz’s favorite toy. She “plays soccer” with this jingle ball pretty much every day in our kitchen!

  • Springs - Everyone loves these. Lately, it’s been Fiona’s favorite - and she’s not typically super playful.

  • Crinkles - These make for great play AND great picture taking! The noise gets their attention and I snap a photo for the page - then I toss it for them to chase.

  • “Crinkle Puffs” - I’m realizing as I write this that we have hilarious names for our cat toys. We call these “Crinkle Puffs” and they’re one of Diesel’s favorites.

  • SmartyKat “Mouseys” - We call this the “Mousey”. Diesel loves them!

  • The Purple Worm - This wand teaser actually has several attachments, but we call it “The Purple Worm” because that’s the first one we used and oh my was it a hit! This is a go-to for supervised playtime - although I never leave teaser wands out unsupervised, for fear the string could be dangerous.

  • Da Bird - This is another go-to for supervised playtime! Something about the way this particular feather toy flutters is really attractive to my cats.

Beds

Scratchers

  • Corrugated Cardboard Scratcher - My cats love all shapes and sizes of corrugated cardboard scratchers. This one is a standard rectangle, but they come in so many varieties.

  • Cat Scratcher House - I’m so surprised at how durable this one is! We’ve had it for over a year and it’s still a favorite - and still in pretty good shape.

  • Classic Scratching Post - This was so well loved that after several years of service, it’s completely shredded. I need to either re-wrap it or get a new one. Either way, this classic scratching post is a favorite!

Carriers

The PetMate Two-Door Kennel is my go-to. It’s sturdy, easy to clean, and the two doors (one on top, one on the front) makes getting a fussy cat to the vet just a tad bit easier.

Other

  • The Snugglesafe Microwaveable Heating Disc - Got a pet that hates the cold? This heating disc is intended to be used for very young puppies and kittens who can't regulate their body temperature yet - but our adult animals enjoy it too!

Bonus Content: For the Nervous Cat

Our sweet black cat, Avery

Avery is so incredibly nervous and shy, so we’ve been trying some things to help her feel more comfortable. These were all recommendations from our vet.

  • Royal Canin’s “Calm” Food - Cats are tricky to medicate and we were afraid that giving Avery anxiety medicine would just traumatize her even more, so our vet suggested we try her on Royal Canin’s “Calm” Food. It’s a prescription diet so I don’t have a link to share - you’ll need to talk to your vet if you are interested in trying it. I can say it along with the other things listed below have really, really helped Avery turn a corner and she’s clearly more comfortable now.

  • Feliway Optimum or Feliway Multicat Pheromone Diffusers - A newer and really cool product, the Feliway diffusers mimic cat’s natural pheromones to help them feel safe and comfortable. We used them when we moved, when we had foster kittens, and now we use one by Avery’s favorite cat bed. They last about 30 days and you can buy refills (optimum or multicat)

  • Comfort Zone Cat Calming Collar - Similar to the above, the calming collar releases calming pheromones. Avery has been using these for several months now! Unlike the diffuser, it stays with her wherever she goes in the house. This seemed to be much more effective than the diffuser for Avery.
